Wings Over Water: The Lost Lake Rejuvenation

About the Project

The Wings Over Water initiative aims to transform the area around a newly rejuvenated lake on the Cielo Ranch Reserve into a haven for migrating birds, waterfowl, and nature enthusiasts. Through careful research and planting of bird-friendly flora, the project will create a rich, biodiverse habitat that supports avian life and attracts eco-tourists. The construction of birding hides will offer visitors an immersive nature experience, promoting conservation through ecotourism.

Goals

• Research and plant a variety of native, bird-friendly plants and trees around Lost Lake to create an optimal habitat for migrating birds and waterfowl.

• Construct strategically placed birding hides around the lake, designed to blend with the natural environment and offer unobtrusive wildlife observation points for birders and photographers.

• Develop an ecotourism model that includes day-pass entry fees for access to the birding hides, generating revenue for ongoing conservation efforts at Cielo Ranch Reserve.

Impacts

• Enhances the ecological value of the Lost Lake area by increasing its biodiversity and providing critical habitat for bird species.

• Offers educational opportunities for visitors to learn about bird conservation and the importance of habitat restoration.

• Generates sustainable funding for Forests For Our Future through ecotourism, ensuring the long-term viability of conservation projects.

• Establish the Cielo Ranch Reserve Project as a premier destination for eco-friendly recreation and wildlife photography, raising the profile of conservation efforts regionally and globally.

Project Progress

We’ve already made great strides on the Wings Over Water: Lost Lake Rejuvenation project, thanks to generous support from ecotourism visits to Cielo Ranch Reserve. So far, we’ve completed one bird blind, begun land preparation, installed fencing, and planted over 150 native trees and aquatic plants, covering about 60% of the initial phase. Our team is currently maintaining and monitoring the reforested zones on a weekly basis to ensure healthy growth and early habitat restoration. We have also installed signs and fencing notifying locals that these areas are protected and hunting is not permitted (hunting is illegal in Costa Rica, but is common due to no enforcement). With your help, we can complete this important project and expand its impact even further.
