About Us

Forests For Our Future isn't just about planting trees; we're growing futures. Our work extends beyond the simple act of reforestation to embrace a comprehensive model of environmental rejuvenation and community empowerment. Here's how we make a difference:

OUR STORY

Forests For Our Future is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming degraded landscapes into flourishing ecosystems.

Since our founding in 2006 by the Robinson Family, we have turned a 75-acre former deforested dairy farm in Puerto Seco, Costa Rica, into a vibrant forest that is now home to over 12,000 native trees. This includes the Mountain Almond, critical for the survival of the endangered Great Green Macaw, which has returned to our forests due to our efforts. We also planted sustainable forestry species such as Teak and Melina, enhancing the productivity and ecological value of the area.

Our reforestation projects have endured floods, droughts, and fires, yet they stand today as robust examples of what can be achieved with dedication and resilience. These areas now support a diverse array of mammals, birds, and insects, and serve as a model for ecological restoration. However, our experiences have also shown us the challenges of forest management, such as human encroachment, cultural differences that include hunting, poaching, and unregulated deforestation. All of this was achieved with a great amount of time, effort and money. Our vision continues to move forward to future accomplishments and success as stewards of this land and beyond.

Our Mission

Inspired by the transformation of Cielo Ranch Reserve, Forests For Our Future is dedicated to restoring degraded landscapes by planting native and regionally appropriate tree species while building a sustainable model of community-based stewardship.

Today, we operate a small vivero (greenhouse) on our property—currently part of a converted carport—where we cultivate a limited number of seedlings. Most of our trees are sourced from local nurseries that specialize in native species found in our region. As our forest matures, we have also begun collecting seeds and young plants from our own land.

Looking ahead, we have designated a site to construct a dedicated nursery that will allow us to significantly expand our propagation efforts. This future vivero will not only support larger-scale reforestation, but also serve as a hub for education and hands-on community involvement.

A central part of our mission is engaging the local community in the restoration process. We plan to involve residents, students, and volunteers in responsibly collecting seeds, growing native plants, and participating directly in tree-planting efforts. By connecting people to the land in practical ways, we aim to foster long-term environmental stewardship and shared responsibility for our forests.

Education & Community Engagement

To date, Forests For Our Future has engaged on a limited basis with the local school, introducing students to the importance of reforestation, wildlife protection, and responsible land stewardship. These early efforts have demonstrated strong interest and enthusiasm among students and educators alike, reinforcing the value of environmental education within the community.

As the organization grows, we plan to expand these efforts when sufficient funding and personnel become available. Our goal is to develop structured education and outreach programs that actively involve students, families, and community members in hands-on conservation activities. These programs will focus on teaching how forests are cultivated, protected, and sustained, while also fostering a shared sense of responsibility for the land and wildlife.

By building meaningful, ongoing partnerships within the community, Forests For Our Future aims to move beyond isolated projects toward long-term engagement—empowering local residents to participate directly in reforestation efforts and become stewards of their own environment.
