Nest Havens for Macaws

About the Project

With the Great Green Macaw facing habitat loss, one of our solutions at Cielo Ranch Reserve Pilot Project is to build and install nesting boxes as potential breeding sites. This initiative provides the opportunity to study the adaptability of Macaws to alternative nesting options, and to provide critical data that could shape future conservation strategies for these and similar species. Each nesting box installed would be equipped with cameras to monitor and study nesting birds.

Goals

• To design, build, and install Macaw-friendly nesting boxes in strategic locations throughout the Cielo Ranch Reserve.

• To monitor the usage of these boxes by the Great Green Macaw, collecting data on occupancy rates, breeding success, and any challenges faced.

• To engage the local community and volunteers in conservation efforts, from the construction of the boxes to monitoring and data collection.

Impacts

• Provides immediate, alternative nesting sites for the Great Green Macaw, potentially increasing their breeding success and population growth.

• Generates valuable research on the effectiveness of nesting boxes for Macaws, contributing to broader conservation and recovery strategies.

• Raises awareness and involves the community in direct conservation actions, fostering a deeper connection to the local ecosystem and its preservation.

Project Progress

We currently have proven designs for these nest boxes, as well as personnel ready to build and safely install the nest boxes in selected trees.
