Guardians of the Green

About the Project

Hunting, of any kind, is not allowed in Costa Rica. This initiative focuses on addressing illegal logging and hunting activities directly by fostering community awareness through education and active participation in conservation efforts. By educating communities about the importance of protecting the regenerated habitats of the forest, we can create a unified front against the threats posed by illegal logging and hunting, ensuring the safety of our burgeoning forests and their inhabitants.

Goals

• Develop and deliver educational programs in local communities to raise awareness about the ecological and legal implications of illegal logging and hunting.

• Engage with local authorities to strengthen enforcement of illegal logging and anti-hunting laws and create deterrents for these activities.

• Establish community watch programs that empower locals to monitor and report illegal logging and hunting activities, creating a network of guardians for protected areas.

Impacts

• Reduced hunting activities in and around reforestation areas through increased local vigilance and legal enforcement.

• Enhanced biodiversity and ecosystem stability in reforested areas,  ensuring the survival of native species and the success of reforestation efforts.

• Strengthened community ties and a collective sense of responsibility towards conservation and wildlife protection.

• Creation of a scalable and replicable model for anti-hunting efforts that can be adapted to other regions facing similar challenges.

Project Progress

We are currently only able to conduct preventive measures against illegal logging and hunting activities in our forests on our existing projects. We have trail cameras placed at different locations to monitor wildlife, as well as entry points for hunters and loggers. We also place private property signs all along property lines to inform would-be hunters that they are not welcome. These do very little to deter hunters, and local authorities are not equipped to pursue or apprehend hunters or illegal loggers. Community cooperation is a key factor to prevent these activities.
