Almond Canopies for Macaws
About the Project
This project focuses on expanding the habitat of the flagship species, the Great Green Macaw at Forests For Our Future's pilot project at Cielo Ranch Reserve. By planting mountain almond trees, or Almendros, their primary nesting and food source, we will continue building on the success of our initial reforestation effort in 2007. After 18 years of growth, we saw the return of these magnificent birds to our forests in 2015. Our goal is to further support their population by ensuring the availability of their critical habitat needs. This project focuses on a technique we call "Spot Planting", in which small areas located within secondary forests are cleared and planted with 5 to 20 trees. This creates Almendro groves, which will eventually create habitat and food sources for the Great Green Macaw and other birds and forest mammals.
Goals
• To plant Almond trees in designated areas within Cielo Ranch Reserve, as well as other areas in Costa Rica. These areas are carefully chosen to optimize the growth of the trees and accessibility for the Great Green Macaws.
• To enhance the biodiversity of the reserve, supporting not only the Great Green Macaw but also other species that benefit from a rich, diverse ecosystem.
• To monitor the impact of these plantings on the local population, contributing valuable data to avian conservation efforts.
Impacts
• Directly supports the conservation and growth of the Great Green Macaw population by providing essential habitat and food sources.
• Demonstrates the tangible benefits of targeted reforestation efforts on wildlife conservation, serving as a model for similar initiatives.
• Engages the local community in conservation efforts, raising awareness about the importance of ecosystem restoration.
Project Progress
We have already planted Almendros in various sites, roughly 300 trees. We have had very positive results, including the return of the Great Green Macaw. We have future grow sites ready for planting in late 2025.
